Eat well with the "food that grows on the water." Native Harvest Wild Rice grows naturally in the lakes of Northern Minnesota, and is hand-harvested by Tribal members from the White Earth Indian Reservation using traditional methods. The Wedge is proud of the fact that Native Harvest is their first partner for the Wedge's domestic fair trade program. Their wild rice is hand-harvested in Onsford, Minnesota by native ricers in the ancient method of skimming through the lakes of northern Minnesota in boats. Consequently, these independent harvesters can't compete with the factory-sized output of patty rice farmers who monopolize the market with GMO rice, machine harvesters, and liberal use of fungicides. Worse, the University of Minnesota is attempting to patent the wild rice genome, which officials of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe see as an infringement on their treaty rights. The brain-child of Winona Laduke, The White Earth Land Recovery project is a diligent group dedicated to maintaining the sustainability and diversity of their ancient rice beds, and the Wedge/WELRP Fair Trade contract is made possible by WELRP's dedication to these principles.
